Distinctive traits

The irregular profile of Monte’s dorsal crest makes him easy to recognize. He also bears a few low scars on his left flank.

Life history

Monte is part of a group of males well known to the team : the Saguenay band. On their way up the Saguenay Fjord, these belugas often reach Sainte-Marguerite Bay, where they engage in some astonishing behavior : vocalizing at the surface, heads and pectoral fins out of the water, and dozing while “logging” at the water’s surface.

On September 20, 1999, we targeted the Saguenay Fjord. This is where Monte was seen. Contact with his group was rather short, less than an hour, due to difficult sea conditions.

Monte was last seen more than a decade ago. What happened to him? Is he dead? Has he remained invisible to the eye of the researcher? Impossible to know at the moment. One thing is certain : we remain vigilant and hope to meet him soon.
