Life history
When we first met with Ashoona in 1986, this beluga was already all white. Ashoona would therefore have been born before 1974.
Despite the obvious markings, Ashoona has only been seen twice. The data do not allow us to determine the sex or the area where Ashoona is seen during the summer season.
Ashoona was one of the first belugas identified by GREMM as part of the photo-identification research program. The individual records compiled from these observations allow us to study the habits, reproductive success and social organization of the belugas. Genetic analysis of biopsies from known belugas enables us to identify their sex and study their family relationships.

Latest news
We last saw Ashoona on August 4, 1990. What happened to him? Is he dead? Has he remained invisible to the searching eye all this time? Impossible to know at the moment. One thing is certain, his story remains a valuable source of information for our knowledge of this fragile population.
