Life history
We first met Sami in 2011. At the time, it was still grey. Beluga whales change color from gray to white between the ages of 12 and 16. When we saw Sami again in 2016, and since then, it has been completely white.
Sami is observed in groups of varying composition. Sometimes it swims with adults only, sometimes with adults and young greys, and sometimes with adults, young greys and calves. In most sightings, the beluga DL71 (Fayo) was with Sami.
The rest of its story will help us to better understand the social life of belugas. By understanding how belugas live, we can better protect them.
