Giving back to the whales... while quenching one’s thirst

Tadoussac microbrewery

Directly overlooking Tadoussac Bay, this microbrewery is a must-see when passing through the village. One of the house beers, Pale (Wh)ale, “pays homage to the beluga, one of the region’s most emblematic species. This ‘mainstream’ beer is designed to appeal to connoisseurs and neophytes alike.” It goes down even smoother when we know that for every litre sold, $0.10 is donated to GREMM to complete the adoption of the beluga DL2023.

Les Bières Béluga Ltd.

In June 2021, Les Bières Béluga Ltd. (website in French) completed the adoption of their beluga Al. For six years, for every beer sold, the agency Foodrinc donated $0.11 to GREMM in order to adopt Al, little by little. Although this goal has already been reached, the company is not stopping there and continues to give the same portion of its revenues to the organization to support the latter’s scientific research efforts.

The brewery offers a selection of 8 beers in varied flavours. There is something for all tastes and all occasions!

“Songs of the River” kombucha

Since 2019, the kombucha company Les Chants du Fleuve (website in French) has been offering a terrific combo: cooling off while helping to save belugas! Every year, the company donates 1% of its profits to three organizations entirely dedicated to protecting the St. Laurence river and its ecosystems, including GREMM. (To find out more about the other two partner organizations: Marine Mammal Observation Network (MMON) and Comité ZIP du Sud-de-l’Estuaire (website in French))

And that’s not all: the company puts its environmental and social commitment into practice in a number of other ways. It supports zero waste through bulk sales, composts all of its organic production waste, promotes local ingredients, incorporates new ingredients from Indigenous or emerging cultures and brews its beverage in Quebec’s Bas-Saint-Laurent region.

Saint-Laurent knitwear

Originally from Rivière-du-Loup, Tricots Saint-Laurent founder Nadia Caron now lives in Ottawa, far from the Estuary. Nevertheless, her love for the St. Lawrence and for marine mammals remains very much alive: since the start of the battle against the now shelved oil port project in Cacouna (article in French), she has been involved with GREMM to help protect whales and river ecosystems. In this context, she created the non-profit organization Tricot Saint-Laurent, which offers beautiful hand-knit scarves. All sales proceeds are donated to GREMM.

Bon Voyage

Bon Voyage Apparel was created in 2021 by a Quebec couple that wanted to showcase the passion they share for drawing, wildlife and travel. Their online boutique offers hoodies, bags, as well as short- and long-sleeved sweaters. Clothing and accessories are produced on demand and are printed in Canada before being shipped anywhere in the world. Bon Voyage Apparel recently designed a special “beluga” print: for every article of clothing sold bearing the image of this species, 10% of the profits will go to GREMM.

Demain Demain

Demain Demain is a company with a clear objective: to encourage responsible consumption through ethical and reusable products. The company offers a range of reusable, zero-waste bags and placemats made locally from recycled water bottles. Its new reversible beluga tote bag was created precisely to help GREMM in its funding efforts. For every bag sold, $8 is donated to GREMM to support the St. Lawrence Beluga Project, which aims to better understand belugas in order to better protect them.

Bonzaï Bleu

Bonzaï Bleu is a company offering environmentally-friendly oral and personal hygiene products. In business since September 2020, Bonzaï Bleu is the culmination of an association between Planète Bambou (Stéfanie Simon) and the Caro & Coco soap factory (Carole Cormier). These two women decided to combine their respective talents to offer a range of zero-waste and environmentally-friendly products.

Bonzaï Bleu helps protect the environment through its contribution to GREMM’s research fund. The company donates 5% of its profits to our organization.

Giving back to the whales... while educating oneself

“It all began when I started looking for posters to decorate my baby’s bedroom. I was looking at alphabet books because I wanted something educational, beautiful and, above all, Québécois. I wasn’t finding very much, so I decided to make it my maternity leave art project. I wanted animals that had a story to tell, important things to say. I immediately thought of the wolverine, the moose which we don’t often see in books, the northern gannet whose largest colony is in Quebec, and especially the whales of the St. Lawrence, which are my favourite animals.”

Illustrator Cathy Faucher is dedicated to creating educational games for children and environmentally-friendly products featuring the images of Quebec’s wild critters.

In 2018, she contributed to the collective adoption of the belugaPolynix through a crowdfunding campaign in which she sold magnets adorned with an adorable beluga. Since then, she has continued to donate $1 to GREMM for every item sold from her online boutique. Thank you Cathy for your indispensable support!

Giving back to the whales... while cultivating one’s creativity

Treasures on the beach

For Amélie Loyer, nature is the masterpiece of masterpieces. Trained in visual and plastic arts, she first discovered Quebec’s Côte-Nord region at the age of 20 and fell in love with it. Since then, she has combined her passions for creation and for our region by crafting maritime-inspired jewelry from shells collected along the shores of the St. Lawrence. She also produces paintings on wood inspired by her encounters with the water. In her collection Mes Trésors sur la Plage (website in French) she aims to showcase the St. Lawrence and the animal species that call it home, including whales. Since 2019, Amélie Loyer has undertaken to donate 5% of her profits to GREMM in order to support marine mammal research and education.

Alessandra Jennifer Ross

Like belugas, humans have very strong social ties. As a professional photographer, Alessandra Jennifer Ross captures the precious relationships that mark people’s lives while providing priceless ways to keep their memories alive. She specializes in wedding and family photos. Moved by nature and by whales, she donates $5 to GREMM’s research fund after every one of her photo shoots. Thank you Alessandra for your passion!

Stuffed Animal House

The cuddly beluga plush toys at the Marine Mammal Interpretation Centre (CIMM) were custom designed by the team at Stuffed Animal House in British Columbia. Every year, this company withholds a certain amount from its sales, which it then donates to GREMM with the goal of eventually completing the adoption of a beluga.

Beluga plush toys are available at the CIMM boutique. If you are not passing through Tadoussac, you can contribute to marine mammal research and education by purchasing any plush toy made by Stuffed Animal House.

Pomme

Singer Claire Pommet, known as Pomme, has wildlife conservation at heart, and the belugas of the St. Lawrence have a special place in it. “These are the first whales I saw in real life, in Tadoussac, four years ago. I find them beautiful, pure, and seeing them from the shore has become an annual ritual.” This young, committed, and talented artist has therefore decided to donate all the profits from her song “À perte de vue” to the Group for Research and Education on Marine Mammals.

This is the second time that Pomme has dedicated one of her songs to whales. In January 2021, she contributed to the collective adoption of the beluga whale Bubulle thanks to the royalties generated by listening to her song “Les animaux sont nos amis”, created with the children of the Carleton-sur-Mer region, in Gaspésie.
