Distinctive traits

Perle can be identified only by the details of her dorsal crest, but the small gray spot on the front and the round scar on the rear of her left flank are her main features.

Life history

We first met Perle in 1993. She was perfectly white. Perle would therefore have been born before 1977.

Perle’s sex is confirmed by genetic analysis of a biopsy taken from her back : she is a female. She belongs to the Saguenay Fjord community of females.

Perle belongs to the Saguenay community. There are two other communities of females : on the south shore and in Kamouraska. Each community has its own territory, and there is little exchange between them. Female belugas become “experts” on their territory, knowing its resources well and able to provide efficiently for their newborn calves.

Latest news

We’re at the mouth of the Saguenay Fjord. We come across a herd of adults and youngsters numbering around twenty. Among the animals, we recognize Perle, whom we haven’t seen for four years. The weather is perfect, but the sun’s glare makes it hard to distinguish all the animals.
