Distinctive traits

DL0236 can be recognized by the large, complex gray spot below the dorsal crest on its right flank. He has a large W-shaped notch at the end of his crest that runs down his left flank. He also has a linear black spot in front of his crest and below the bead, and a circular white spot below the bead opposite his dorsal crest. There is also a large notch at the end of the dorsal crest.

Life history

We first met DL0236 in 1993. Back then, he was still gray. He was dirty white in 2006 and immaculate white in 2020. Beluga whales change color from gray to white between the ages of 12 and 16. It is therefore thought to have originated around 1990.

It has been observed among adults and young grays, as well as with adults, young grays and calves.

The rest of DL0236’s story will tell us a lot about the evolution of the beluga’s social life. By understanding how belugas live, we can better protect them.
