Distinctive traits
H859 is often recognized even before it raises its tail. This humpback whale has a distinctive dorsal fin: large and paddle-shaped, with a clear 1/2-moon-shaped scar on the tip. There are also two hole-shaped scars on the right flank, just in front of the dorsal fin.
H859’s caudal fin has a large cross on its right lobe, like Tic Tac Toe, but the overall color of the tail is darker.
Life history
Following the recovery of the humpback whale population in the St. Lawrence, more and more individuals are being observed every year. As this one is new to the Estuary, there’s still a lot to learn about it. If it becomes a regular in the region, it may even get a name. So, if you ever see a humpback whale, keep an eye out: it could be H859!
