Distinctive traits
DL9096 can be recognized by the large, complex spot on its right flank, near its head. Small notches are found at the beginning of its dorsal crest, including a squarer notch about halfway up the crest. It has a beautiful black line on its left flank, halfway between the vent and the crest.
Life history
We first met DL9096 in 2015. Back then, he was already immaculately white. He was therefore an adult of at least 12 years of age. Beluga whales change color from gray to white between the ages of 12 and 16. He would therefore have been born before 2003.
He was observed among adults and young grays, then with adults and calves.
The rest of DL9096’s story will tell us a lot about the evolution of the beluga’s social life. By understanding how belugas live, we can better protect them.
