Life history
We first encountered DL9087 in 2017. At that time, it was gray. The color change in belugas—the transition from gray to white—occurs between the ages of 12 and 16. It was still gray in 2025, when it was last sighted.
DL9087 swims in groups consisting of adults, gray juveniles, and calves.
The rest of DL9087’s story will teach us a lot about the evolution of beluga social life. It is by understanding how belugas live that we will be able to better protect them.
