DL1610 can be recognized by its bowtie-shaped scar just before its dorsal crest on its left flank. Beautiful notches are also visible at the beginning of his dorsal crest.
Life history
We first met DL1610 in 1999. Back then, he was already immaculately white. Beluga whales change color from gray to white between the ages of 12 and 16. He would therefore have been born before 1987.
It has been observed among groups composed exclusively of adults, among adults and young grays, and with adults, young grays and calves.
The rest of DL1610’s story will tell us a great deal about the evolution of the social life of belugas. By understanding how belugas live, we can better protect them.
