Distinctive traits
DL1500 can be recognized by the large linear scars on its right flank, as well as a small hole between the two scars. Small notches on the dorsal crest can also be seen on the right flank. The left flank features two small spots, one below the crest and the other below the peduncle.
Life history
We first met DL1500 in 1999. In the years since, DL1500 has alternated between gray, white and dirty white. Since 2007, he has been white, signifying that he has reached adulthood. Beluga whales change color from gray to white between the ages of 12 and 16.
DL1500 is male. His sex was confirmed in 2002 by biopsy and genetic analysis of a tiny piece of skin and fat taken from his back.
DL1500 has been observed in groups of adults, adults and young greys, as well as in groups of adults, young greys and calves.
