{"id":53343,"date":"2021-03-11T15:57:47","date_gmt":"2021-03-11T15:57:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/baleinesendirect.org\/la-banquise-tardive-ravie-les-phoques\/"},"modified":"2021-03-12T15:27:24","modified_gmt":"2021-03-12T15:27:24","slug":"seals-delighted-by-late-pack-ice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/baleinesendirect.org\/en\/seals-delighted-by-late-pack-ice\/","title":{"rendered":"Seals Delighted by Late Pack Ice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After a fairly mild winter, the St. Lawrence, parts of which have been ice-covered only for a few weeks even as spring is just around the corner, is providing glimpses of a few marine mammals.<\/p>\n<p>A group of cetaceans that inhabit the St. Lawrence year-round was seen on Monday, March 8: a dozen belugas near <strong>\u00cele du Bic<\/strong>, spotted from <strong>Cap-\u00e0-l\u2019Original<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Ice is forming in <strong>Gasp\u00e9 Bay<\/strong>, giving harbour seals a place to bask in groups of ten or so individuals since Friday, March 5. Notwithstanding belugas, however, whales have been rare in recent weeks, so it is mostly seals that are entertaining our observers posted along the St. Lawrence.<\/p>\n<p>The smallest pinniped species on the North Shore, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pinnipeds.org\/seal-information\/species-information-pages\/the-phocid-seals\/harbour-seal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">harbour seal<\/a> can be observed year-round in the St. Lawrence.
