{"id":51134,"date":"2020-05-21T15:29:28","date_gmt":"2020-05-21T15:29:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/baleinesendirect.org\/vers-une-nouvelle-saison-record-de-rorquals-a-bosse\/"},"modified":"2020-05-23T23:36:04","modified_gmt":"2020-05-23T23:36:04","slug":"new-record-season-in-sight-for-humpbacks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/baleinesendirect.org\/en\/new-record-season-in-sight-for-humpbacks\/","title":{"rendered":"New Record Season in Sight for Humpbacks?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The jagged black-and-white tails of <a href=\"https:\/\/baleinesendirect.org\/en\/discover\/the-species-of-the-st-lawrence\/the-13-species\/humpback-whale\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">humpback whales <\/a>are prompting shouts of joy from observers in <a href=\"https:\/\/baleinesendirect.org\/en\/observe\/where\/cote-nord\/#les-bergeronnes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Les Bergeronnes<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/baleinesendirect.org\/en\/observe\/where\/cote-nord\/#franquelin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Franquelin<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/baleinesendirect.org\/en\/observe\/where\/cote-nord\/#sept-iles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Port-Cartier<\/a>\u2019s Rivi\u00e8re-Pentec\u00f4te sector\u00a0<\/strong>this week. The presence of this species in the St. Lawrence is relatively recent and, since 2018, the number of individuals observed has been increasing significantly. Imagine: in the Estuary, it wasn\u2019t until the year 2000 that more than two individuals were identified every summer!<\/p>\n<p>In 2019, there\u2019s even talk about a record year for humpbacks. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rorqual.com\/english\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mingan Island Cetacean Study <\/a>(MICS), which manages the photo-identification catalogue of humpbacks in the St. Lawrence, recently published the results of last summer\u2019s census. A total of 129 different individuals were photographed by MICS, GREMM and their various collaborators. Of these, 108 are <a href=\"https:\/\/baleinesendirect.org\/en\/filtre-baleines\/?categorie_portrait=humpback-whale\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">individuals that are already known <\/a>to researchers. Another piece of good news is that 14 newborns have been observed.<\/p>\n<p>Humpback whales come to the St. Lawrence to feed. Some individuals seem more loyal to certain sectors, such as the Gasp\u00e9, the Estuary or the waters of the Mingan Archipelago. Others, however, visit different regions. It\u2019s more or less the same situation that can be observed with fin whales.<\/p>\n<p>Will the fin whale observed off the Manicouagan Peninsula at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/baleinesendirect.org\/en\/observe\/where\/cote-nord\/#pointe-aux-outardes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pointe-Lebel<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>on May 18 remain in the area all summer long? Perhaps. But it may also be one of those individuals observed off <strong>Port-Cartier\u00a0<\/strong>in the past few days. Or, perhaps, this individual is responsible for the giant spout spotted in <strong>Gasp\u00e9 Bay\u00a0<\/strong>on May 20.<\/p>\n<p>Several observers have also been reporting the presence of multiple species during the same observation session. For example, off <strong>Sept-\u00celes<\/strong>, blue whales \u2013 including B360 \u2013 fin whales, porpoises and minke whales, not to mention harbour seals, are seen swimming in close proximity.
