{"id":51101,"date":"2015-09-25T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2015-09-25T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/baleinesendirect.org\/retrouver-symphonie-au-beau-milieu-de-lestuaire-par-rene-roy\/"},"modified":"2020-05-21T20:46:48","modified_gmt":"2020-05-21T20:46:48","slug":"finding-symphonie-in-the-middle-of-the-estuary-by-rene-roy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/baleinesendirect.org\/en\/finding-symphonie-in-the-middle-of-the-estuary-by-rene-roy\/","title":{"rendered":"Finding Symphonie in the Middle of the Estuary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I had a great outing in the Estuary on September 22 together with Katy and David, two members of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rorqual.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mingan Island Cetacean Study (MICS)<\/a> research team, who were coming back from their field work with blue whales in Gasp\u00e9sie. We had an absolutely fabulous day on a glassy sea. We observed several species of birds (red-necked phalaropes, common terns, Northern gannets, Atlantic puffins, razorbills, murres, gulls, etc.) and four beautiful blue whales, all in the heart of the Estuary between Petits-Escoumins and Saint-Fabien, as well as a multitude of porpoises and four minke whales.<\/p>\n<p>All three of us experienced a thrilling moment at the sight of our beloved Symphonie, a female recognized amongst the four female blue whales observed. <a href=\"http:\/\/baleinesendirect.org\/en\/from-the-st-lawrence-estuary-to-the-north-atlantic-the-odyssey-of-the-blue-whale-symphony-and-her-satellite-tag\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">An Argos transmitter had been placed on Symphonie&#8217;s back last autumn by a team from Fisheries and Oceans Canada<\/a>, while the animal was off the coast of Forestville, in the St. Lawrence Estuary. We were able to follow Symphonie&#8217;s movements for much of the winter. Here she was again, almost a year later; the cycle has been completed. She appeared to be a little thinner. The other three blue whales were also known individuals, including B197, a regular visitor to the Estuary that I&#8217;ve observed at the same spot on a few occasions.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few photos from that magic day:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Photos: \u00a9 Ren\u00e9 Roy<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/baleinesendirect.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Rene\u0301.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-12985\" src=\"http:\/\/baleinesendirect.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Rene\u0301-150x112.jpg\" alt=\"Rene\u0301\" \/><\/a>Ren\u00e9 Roy is an amateur cetologist who is passionate about the sea and whales; he resides in Pointe-au-P\u00e8re, in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region.
