{"id":50672,"date":"2020-04-29T19:50:24","date_gmt":"2020-04-29T19:50:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/baleinesendirect.org\/les-baleines-peuvent-elles-setouffer\/"},"modified":"2020-04-30T21:18:37","modified_gmt":"2020-04-30T21:18:37","slug":"can-whales-suffocate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/baleinesendirect.org\/en\/can-whales-suffocate\/","title":{"rendered":"Can whales suffocate?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\">After a week of severe weather in September 2019, a naturalist from the whale-watching outfitter Croisi\u00e8res Escoumins wondered whether whales could suffocate due to rainwater or waves accidentally entering into their blowhole.<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\">During a dive, a whale\u2019s blowhole (or blowholes) is closed by \u201cfibrous plugs\u201d that prevent water from entering its respiratory tracts. On the surface, the whale contracts its muscles to remove the plugs, allowing it to breathe. Once the blowhole is open, water could theoretically enter the nasal cavities and cause the whale to \u201cswallow a mouthful\u201d. However, the subsequent exhalation should expel the water since a whale\u2019s breath is very powerful.
