{"id":50413,"date":"2016-10-08T20:35:22","date_gmt":"2016-10-08T20:35:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/baleinesendirect.org\/des-oiseaux-et-des-rorquals-a-bosse-en-masse-par-olivia-capeillere\/"},"modified":"2020-04-06T19:06:07","modified_gmt":"2020-04-06T19:06:07","slug":"birds-and-humpbacks-galore","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/baleinesendirect.org\/en\/birds-and-humpbacks-galore\/","title":{"rendered":"Birds and humpbacks galore!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Olivia Capeillere<\/p>\n<div id=\"contenuMagazine\">\n<p>As we enter into early fall, observers everywhere along the St. Lawrence Estuary and Gulf have been pleasantly surprised by the constant presence of humpback whales and other marine mammals and seabirds!<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, at the tip of <strong>Cap Gasp\u00e9<\/strong>, it was rorqual mania, with one blue whale, several fin whales and at least three humpback whales.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21645\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21645\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/baleinesendirect.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Jawbreaker-Cr\u00e9dit-GREMM-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21645 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/baleinesendirect.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Jawbreaker-Cr\u00e9dit-GREMM-1-250x166.jpg\" alt=\"Jawbreaker \u00a9 GREMM\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21645\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jawbreaker \u00a9 GREMM<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>One of our colleagues, who has made several trips <strong>between Forestville and Matane<\/strong> in recent days, was able to observe hundreds of white-sided dolphins and identify ten blue whales, including the well-known Jawbreaker on 29 September.<\/p>\n<p>The Sept-\u00celes Research and Education Centre (CERSI) reports many harbour porpoises and minke whales and ten fin whales off <strong>Sept-\u00celes<\/strong>. At Pointe Paradis in the <strong>Manicouagan Peninsula<\/strong>, one observer tallied from shore twenty whales, including eleven humpbacks, all in less than twenty minutes of observation! He also observed multiple white-sided dolphins performing acrobatics and jumping out of the water. Another person was able to see four humpbacks off of <strong>Saint-Pancrace<\/strong>. Our observer in <strong>Franquelin<\/strong> has been seeing porpoises and a few minke whales on a daily basis. But her greatest surprise was humpbacks, between 2 and 5 individuals a day, seen not only by herself, but also by many villagers during all of late September.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21673\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21673\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/baleinesendirect.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/queue-veau-de-Quill-Cr\u00e9dit-Jane-Stairs-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21673 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/baleinesendirect.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/queue-veau-de-Quill-Cr\u00e9dit-Jane-Stairs-1-250x156.jpg\" alt=\"Veau de Quill \u00a9Jane Stairs\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21673\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Quill&#8217;s calf \u00a9Jane Stairs<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As for the Saguenay-St. Lawrence Marine Park, there are still many minke whales and harbour porpoises being observed <strong>between Tadoussac and Les Escoumins<\/strong>, as well as herds of gray seals and belugas in different sectors. Concerning fin whales, between six and seven individuals have been detected throughout the Estuary, sometimes off <strong>Les Bergeronnes<\/strong>, sometimes in the area of <strong>\u00cele Verte<\/strong>. Trou is still present and is regularly observed with another fin whale. Zipper was also spotted on Tuesday off the coast of \u00cele Verte. And a nice surprise for early October: four humpbacks! These include Picotine, present in the Marine Park since May, and the calf of Quill, a one-and-a-half-year-old juvenile. The latter shows its tail and bears teeth marks, which are probably from a killer whale attack. According to MICS, it already had these bite marks last summer when it was first seen accompanied by its mother and barely 6 months old!
