{"id":50340,"date":"2015-08-11T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2015-08-11T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/baleinesendirect.org\/paire-de-geants-bleus\/"},"modified":"2020-04-03T13:14:35","modified_gmt":"2020-04-03T13:14:35","slug":"pair-of-blue-giants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/baleinesendirect.org\/en\/pair-of-blue-giants\/","title":{"rendered":"Pair of Blue Giants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Researcher Anik Boileau, director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cersi.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Centre d\u2019\u00c9ducation et de Recherche de Sept-\u00eeles (CERSI)<\/a>, based in Sept-\u00celes, observed a pair of blue whales on August 9 off Port-Cartier. The two giants swam together in unison for two hours before separating and maintaining a distance of approximately one nautical mile for nearly three hours. &#8220;A very interesting observation for us as we study the social behaviour of these giants,&#8221; emphasized the researcher. In addition, she noted the presence of minke and fin whales that day, as well as 200-300 Northern gannets.<\/p>\n<p>Rather solitary and nomadic, blue whales travel in pairs or in small temporary groups. In the St. Lawrence, the formation of stable pairs lasting a day or even several weeks is sometimes observed beginning in July. These pairs are most often male\/female duos. According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rorqual.com\/index.php?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mingan Island Cetacean Study (MICS)<\/a> team, this association is believed to possibly be <a href=\"http:\/\/baleinesendirect.org\/en\/scientific-exploration\/research-projects\/blue-whale\/why-do-st-lawrence-blue-whales-pair-up-in-the-fall\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a precursor to the reproduction that takes place in winter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The blue whale is a summer seasonal resident of the Gulf and Estuary, where it can sometimes be seen quite close to the coast. <a href=\"http:\/\/baleinesendirect.org\/en\/looking-for-whales-with-our-ears\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sightings have been reported in recent weeks, including in the Escoumins-Tadoussac and Gasp\u00e9 regions<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>La chercheuse Anik Boileau, directrice du Centre d\u2019\u00e9ducation et de recherche de Sept-\u00celes (CERSI) bas\u00e9 \u00e0 Sept-\u00celes, observait une paire de rorquals bleus le 9 ao\u00fbt dernier.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":18,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[36],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-50340","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-observation-of-the-week"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.6 -
