Very few were seen this past winter. The day before, nearly a dozen individuals were also spotted in <strong>Tadoussac Bay<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Crab harvesters in Fishing Area 17 have also been encountering herds of belugas off the coasts of <strong>Les Escoumins<\/strong>, <strong>Forestville<\/strong> and <strong>Le Bic<\/strong>. <a href=\"https:\/\/baleinesendirect.org\/ou-se-retrouvent-les-belugas-du-saint-laurent-au-printemps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">In spring, the territory frequented by these white whales<\/a> (article in French) is believed to extend from \u00cele aux Coudres to the Gasp\u00e9 Peninsula.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_31236\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31236\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/baleinesendirect.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/RP_eideraduvetDSC_0417.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-31236 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/baleinesendirect.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/RP_eideraduvetDSC_0417-250x151.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-31236\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u00a9 Renaud Pintiaux<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Off the shores of <strong>Franquelin<\/strong> and <strong>Sept-\u00celes<\/strong>, it is the silhouettes of crab fishermen and seabirds rather than that of large rorquals that are seen. Our collaborator in <strong>Franquelin<\/strong> has been observing common eiders on a daily basis. These large sea ducks live in arctic and subarctic coastal marine areas. In the Estuary, they nest between \u00cele-aux-Grues and Pointe-des-Monts. They are also abundant in certain archipelagos of the North Shore, particularly between Pointe-des-Monts and Blanc-Sablon. In <strong>Sept-\u00celes<\/strong>, scoters have been arriving in increasingly greater numbers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Gasp\u00e9 Bay is finally free of ice,&#8221; mentions a resident of <strong>Cap-aux-Os<\/strong>. Will the whales venture closer to shore? Already, two humpbacks are seen on April 9 between <strong>Pointe-Saint-Pierre <\/strong>and<strong> L&#8217;Anse-\u00e0-Brillant<\/strong>. On the morning of April 12, four fin whales are spotted off <strong>Cap-des-Rosiers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In<strong> Sainte-Anne-des-Monts<\/strong>, one observer witnesses a series of spouts that he describes as &#8220;ball-shaped and 1 to 2\u00a0m high&#8221;. On account of the rough seas, the back and tail go unnoticed. Maybe a humpback? Possibly, as the shape of the spouts observed resembles that of this species. <a href=\"https:\/\/baleinesendirect.org\/en\/its-snowing-on-the-whales\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">One week earlier<\/a>, three humpback whales had been seen a little farther downstream in Mont-Louis. However, one must be careful, as a number of factors influence the impression a whale&#8217;s spout can give. The wind can distort its shape, as can the light and the humidity in the air. The height of the blow also depends on what exactly the animal is doing.
