For the past two weeks, the team was aboard this boat, not at sea, but on terra firma, protecting the craft from the elements for the winter. Its season on the water had ended prematurely in early October due to a mechanical issue. During this time, the GREMM’s second boat, BpJAM, stayed at the docks to allow the team to complete its season at sea. The BBE project (beluga behavioural ecology) aims to define the social nature of groups, shed light on their movements and use of habitat, identify their critical habitats and their vulnerability to human activities. It also aims to evaluate the reproductive success of females and study population dynamics.

Four months earlier, at the end of June, the team takes to the water for its first days in the field. They encounter herds of belugas which they know well and which remain faithful to their territories. They work in the Saguenay Fjord in particular, which is sheltered from the wind. They see two calves swimming in close proximity to their mothers. It’s the beginning of the beluga calving season, which lasts through September.
<!--p>

Deux veaux © GREMM

Several calves are seen over the course of the season in the company of well known females such as Marjo, DL1757 a.k.a. Boursouffle, and Miss Frontenac. In the case of Miss Frontenac, it was her first known calf. Boursouffle is seen again with a calf, as is her daughter Marguerite; in other words, mother and daughter are both moms at the same time. One day, the team notes the presence of six calves during a single encounter. Another day, the team follows a newborn’s first moments as it struggles to keep up with the much faster and much larger juveniles. On July 25, the team sails to the vicinity of Buoy K54 at the mouth of the Saguenay, where it discovers the female Marjo surrounded and maintained at the surface by about ten or so bulls. Bodies are rolling on the surface and the team spots several erect pink penises through the waves and foam. When they approach, the female even uses the boat as a screen or refuge. On July 30, we identify the male Dance-Sea (known since 1989) dozing off, completely motionless at the water’s surface. The team had even received a call to verify whether or not it was a carcass.

Then, in September, the team works on a research project spearheaded by scientist Véronique Lesage (Fisheries and Oceans Canada) and conducted in collaboration with the GREMM, Saint Mary’s University in Nova Scotia and the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute (Florida Atlantic University), in an effort to determine the proportion of gestating (pregnant) females and to compare this figure to what might be expected in a healthy population. The project is in its second year, which has been a great success. Sectors frequented by belugas were all visited and the number of biopsies performed more than doubled compared to the previous year: 53 vs. 22 in 2013. An overwhelming success.

Furthermore, weather conditions are “good” this summer. Even if fog occasionally shrouds the St. Lawrence, the team generally manages to pursue its work, accompanied at times by the foghorns of cargo ships.

The field season is now over, but analyses continue in order to learn a little more about the health of the St. Lawrence beluga population, understand the reasons for its decline and brainstorm solutions for its future.

<!--p> Photos from the season:

[gallery link="file" ids="|"]

2014 BBE Project Team:
Scientific oversight: Robert Michaud, GREMM researcher and founder
Michel Moisan and Marie-Hélène D’Arcy: senior technicians; Tim Perrero and Renaud Pintiaux: research assistants and photographers for the GREMM;
Mélissa Tremblay: research assistant.
