This is just one of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fisheries.noaa.gov\/national\/marine-life-distress\/2019-gray-whale-unusual-mortality-event-along-west-coast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hundreds of grey whales that have been found up and down the west coast over the past six months<\/a>. At the other end of the country, almost at the same time,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/baleinesed.wpengine.com\/en\/right-whale-what-is-happening-in-2019\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a male right whale nicknamed Wolverine<\/a>\u00a0is found drifting in the waters of the St. Lawrence. Since 2017, 22 right whale carcasses have been recovered from Canadian and US waters. Could these distant cousins be \u200b\u200bsuffering from the same fate?<\/p>\n<p>According to Vancouver Aquarium\u2019s head veterinarian Martin Haulena, these two populations are quite different and have very contrasting situations: \u201cFor grey whales, we are witnessing an increase in the Northeast Pacific population, which the most recent estimates place at 27,000 individuals! North Atlantic right whales, on the other hand, are on the brink of extinction.\u2009University of New Brunswick researcher Kimberly Davies adds,\u00a0 \u201cThere are just 411 left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For both species, an \u201cunusual mortality event*\u201d was reported by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency (NOAA).
