{"id":45794,"date":"2016-02-23T17:38:34","date_gmt":"2016-02-23T17:38:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/baleines.wpengine.com\/?p=45794"},"modified":"2020-05-15T16:55:32","modified_gmt":"2020-05-15T16:55:32","slug":"24-st-lawrence-belugas-adopted","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/baleinesendirect.org\/en\/24-st-lawrence-belugas-adopted\/","title":{"rendered":"24 St.Lawrence belugas have been adopted!"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"contenuMagazine\">\n<p>In late 2014, the Group for Research and Education on Marine Mammals (<a href=\"http:\/\/gremm.org\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GREMM<\/a>) and its colleagues from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/baleinesed.wpengine.com\/en\/adopt-a-beluga\/beluga-project\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">St. Lawrence Beluga Project<\/a>\u00a0relaunched the\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/baleinesed.wpengine.com\/en\/adopt-a-beluga\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adopt a Beluga<\/a><\/em>\u00a0campaign in an effort to raise funds for St. Lawrence beluga research. Since then, 24 belugas have found sponsors. The latter include Qu\u00e9bec City and Montr\u00e9al mayors R\u00e9gis Labeaume and Denis Coderre, respectively, Quebec Minister of Sustainable Development, Environment and the Fight against Climate Change David Heurtel, Myl\u00e8ne Paquette, Canadian Steamship Lines and several companies within Quebec and throughout Canada.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Creative Initiatives<\/strong><br \/>\nSoon after the campaign kicked off, a movement of solidarity took root in the cities of Qu\u00e9bec City, Montr\u00e9al, L\u00e9vis as well as the municipalities of Tadoussac, Ch\u00e2teauguay, Salaberry-de-Valleyfield and Beauharnois for the adoption of a <a href=\"https:\/\/baleinesed.wpengine.com\/en\/adopt-a-beluga\/family-album\/#de-villes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">group of 10 belugas<\/a>\u00a0by some forty riverside municipalities along the St. Lawrence. \u201c<em>Because we believe in the importance of a healthy St. Lawrence, because belugas are the most eloquent reflection of the St. Lawrence, we enthusiastically support the Adopt a Beluga campaign<\/em>\u201c, declared Mayor Labeaume. Through the contest entitled\u00a0<em>Our Beluga\u2019s Name is<\/em>\u2026, students from some one hundred elementary school classes across Quebec suggested names for these 10 belugas: B\u00e9libec, Splash and company.<\/p>\n<p>The founders of Les Bi\u00e8res B\u00e9lugas Lt\u00e9e introduced a Golden Ale in June in an effort to adopt the beluga AL. Students also teamed up to take part in the movement. \u201c<em>By adopting a beluga, we\u2019re not merely protecting a marine animal, but also helping to preserve everything around them<\/em>\u201c, explains Marie-Pier Raymond, who helped spearhead the adoption of DL0217 by students at the C\u00e9gep \u00c9douard-Montpetit near Montr\u00e9al. Other citizens chose to get on board by participating in the collective adoption of the female beluga Ath\u00e9na: Connor Smith-Hott, age 6, contributed a cheque for $50 \u2013 the entire content of his piggy bank \u2013 when he visited Tadoussac, while Jonah Gapes, 10<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0grade student from Jonqui\u00e8re, raised $1,000 all by himself.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Call for an Even Larger Family<\/strong><br \/>\nDuring the adoption campaign initiated in 1988, 122 belugas were able to find sponsors. Today, a new family is being formed, and GREMM President and Scientific Director Robert Michaud aspires to see it grow. \u201c<em>Despite the conservation measures taken and the partial protection of its habitat, the St. Lawrence beluga population is declining. We are observing unexplained mortalities in newborns.
