{"id":44096,"date":"2016-08-25T20:48:00","date_gmt":"2016-08-25T20:48:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/baleines.wpengine.com\/des-plaisanciers-sensibilises\/"},"modified":"2020-04-08T13:42:40","modified_gmt":"2020-04-08T13:42:40","slug":"boater-awareness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/baleinesendirect.org\/en\/boater-awareness\/","title":{"rendered":"Boater Awareness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the latest issue of its magazine\u00a0<em>Plaisance<\/em>\u00a0(September 2016), the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rpq.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Regroupement des plaisanciers du Qu\u00e9bec<\/a>\u00a0(Quebec boaters society, RQP) reminds recreational boaters of the rules to follow when observing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/baleinesed.wpengine.com\/en\/whales-of-the-st-lawrence\/the-13-species-of-the-st-lawrence\/beluga-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">St. Lawrence belugas<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Boaters have an important role to play in protecting this endangered population. In summer months, they frequently encounter belugas in the St. Lawrence Estuary and the Saguenay Fjord. It\u2019s also in summer that female belugas give birth, feed and raise their newborns.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe need space and tranquillity to take proper care of our young, feed and rest. When you spot us, we request that you slow down and not try to approach us. Maintain a distance of at least 400 metres between us and your boat. Even if we swim toward your boat, slowly and cautiously move away and do not stop \u2013 we are not looking for playmates!\u201d,\u00a0<\/em>mentions\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/baleinesed.wpengine.com\/en\/adopt-a-beluga\/april\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">April<\/a>, the beluga adopted by the RPQ in 2016 in the context of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/baleinesed.wpengine.com\/en\/adopt-a-beluga\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adopt a Beluga<\/a>\u00a0campaign, during a fictitious interview.<\/p>\n<p>The RPQ is thereby participating in efforts to raise awareness for the protection of St. Lawrence belugas.
