The abundance index, calculated from eight visual aerial surveys conducted in August and September, puts the number of belugas in 2014 at approximately 1,600, or nearly twice as many as the 2012 estimate, which placed the population at fewer than 900. The authors of the study point out however that the 2014 index, which is based on a different census technique, cannot be compared to previous indices and is not a sign of a growing population. The latter is still considered to have been declining at an annual rate of 1 to 1.5% since the early 2000s and its \u201cendangered\u201d status has recently been made official in the <a href=\"http:\/\/gazette.gc.ca\/rp-pr\/p2\/2017\/2017-05-03\/pdf\/g2-15109.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Canada Gazette<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ever since the St. Lawrence beluga appeared on the Canadian endangered species list in 1983, the size and trajectory of its population have been the subject of debates and the source of confusion on a multitude of occasions.
