Distinctive traits

DL0050’s name, Double Vent, comes from its vent-shaped scar just in front of its dorsal crest. In 1993, he acquired an additional notch at the end of his dorsal crest.

Life history

Double Vent was first observed in 1986. His “coat” was already immaculate white. He was therefore born before 1977.

His large size, habits and social affiliations clearly indicated that Double Vent was a male. On July 31, 1995, a biopsy confirmed it. Double Vent is a regular sighting in the Saguenay Fjord. He is part of one of two male networks in the Saguenay.

One day, the team hears Double Vent’s voice. With his companions, he emits surface vocalizations and sticks his head and tail out of the water. Whistling, snapping, squeaking and growling, the beluga’s vocal repertoire is vast, hence its nickname of “sea canary”. This repertoire could be an adaptation to life near the ice, where ambient noise is omnipresent.

Latest news

Double Vent was last seen on September 17, 2003. He was in a group of around thirty individuals in the Bergeronnes sector near Anse à la Cave. As visibility became increasingly poor, we lost contact with the animals, but spotted Double Vent swimming with DL0217.

Double Vent was last seen over a decade ago. What happened to him? Is he dead? Has he remained invisible to the eye of the researcher? Impossible to know at the moment. One thing is certain, we remain vigilant and hope to meet him soon.
