Distinctive traits
It’s easy to recognize Agatho at first glance. A very large gash in the back of his dorsal ridge removes about a quarter of it.
Life history
We first met Agatho in 1995. On his skin, we could still see traces of slightly gray colored skin. He would have been born around 1983 or earlier.
Agatho is part of the network of males that frequent the downstream sector between Tadoussac and Les Escoumins.
When we observe Agatho, he is regularly found with individuals that could be described as “bamboozlers”, as these groups are often made up of adolescent males. These aggregations are often interesting to observe, as the animals are very dynamic, they come to study our boat and can sometimes even be heard vocalizing. Occasionally, they strike the surface of the water with their bellies or do what we call “bodysurfing”.

Latest news
On October 10, 2007, we found ourselves with a herd of at least 250 individuals at the mouth of the Saguenay. There are adults, but also several youngsters with a distinctive gray “coat”. The herd is highly dynamic, with heads, tails and pectoral fins sticking out of the water. Several individuals adopt a behavior known as “porpoising” : they move by accelerating below the surface, then vigorously project themselves out of the water. Impressive!
