Distinctive traits

As easy as it is to recognize Aqua-Bulle thanks to her large, irregular scar on the right flank, the slight details of her dorsal ridge make the task more difficult on the left flank.

Life history

Aqua-Bulle was first observed in 1989. She was already immaculately white. She was therefore born before 1977.

Her small size, her habits and the presence of a newborn alongside her confirm that Aqua-Bulle is a female from the Saguenay community.

There is a form of segregation among belugas. Females and calves mainly use the upstream part of the population’s summer range. Here, they form large communities in which they care for newborns and young. We were able to identify three female communities, each occupying its own territory. Associations between females in the same community are variable. They may vary according to the reproductive status of the females, whether they are pregnant or not, or whether they are accompanied by a youngster.

Latest news

We last saw Aqua-Bulle on July 29, 1991, more than twenty years ago. What happened to her? Did she die? Has she remained invisible to the researcher’s eye all this time? Impossible to know at the moment. One thing’s for sure, her story remains a valuable source of information for our knowledge of this fragile population.
